Time: 8:30-9:45, May 9 (NEW YORK, GMT-4)Zoom Webinar ID: 844 9111 0481 Passcode: 854927Session Concept Note:The proposed side event will address the importance and pivotal role of open science as an innovative solution for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in countries of the Global South and fostering their post-pandemic recovery and prosperity. On one hand, the global south has the largest bio-, geo- and cultural diversities; and on the other hand, the digital divide hinders the data flow from the north. The pursuit of open science may narrow this gap. We will explore various aspects, including the impact of open-access scientific journals in accelerating the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, providing the least developed countries with free or low-cost access to academic and professional content from Elsevier, as a funding partner of Research4Life initiative, the Springer-Nature SDG Programme for sharing the discoveries that address the world’s challenges of sustainable development, the intersection of open science and global partnerships, the potential to enhance human reproductive health. We will also discuss how DDE (Deep-time Digital Earth) will bring Big Data analytics, machine learning, AI, and other computational technologies and tools to enhance data sharing, promote data-driven research, knowledge generation in earth sciences, thus contributing to the overall objectives of the 2024 STI Forum and helping advance progress towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We believe that by highlighting the value of open science practices, we can significantly contribute to SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) through the corporations on biosphere and eugenics, SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through DDE and Multi-stakeholders activities, and potentially other SDGs by sharing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and bridging the research gap between global north and global south. It will foster dialogue among stakeholders on how to overcome the barriers to open science and to propose actionable recommendations for enhancing international cooperation and capacity building. The discussions will aim at providing insights and evidence-based strategies to inform the Forum’s agenda and shaping collaborative efforts towards achieving the SDGs through inclusive, affordable and sustainable research practices.Opening Remarks:Mr. Navid HANIFAssistant Secretary-General for Economic Development in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)Moderator:Prof. Wei YANG Chair of CCOS, formal President of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)Speakers (in alphabetic order):Prof. Mohamed-Slim ALOUINI (M), Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at KAUSTProf. Lidia Arthur BRITO (F), UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences Prof. Zi-Jiang CHEN(F), Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, President ofInstitute of Women, Children and Reproductive Health, Shandong UniversityDr. Youngsuk (YS) CHI (M), Chairman of ElsevierProf. Min LI (F), Director of the Office of Global Engagement, Zhejiang UniversityDr. Niels Peter THOMAS (M), President for Springer Nature Greater China and Managing Director of Springer Nature Books DivisionDr. Jian WANG (M), President of Zhejiang Lab, founder of Ali Cloud, one of initiators of DDEMore Information: https://sdgs.un.org/tfm/STIForum2024

All over the world, Waste-to-Energy (WtE) facilities are becoming more and more important in increasing energy efficiency and fulfilling climate goals. In the last fifteen years, China has made enormous progress in phasing out landfilling with Its 922 WtE facilities that treat thermally more than 255 million tons of waste. The Chinese WtE capacity now exceeds the EU, US, and Japan combined. Moreover, the mass production of WtE plants in China has decreased appreciably the per ton capital investment for WtE plants, thus making them more affordable for developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The Global WtERT Council and Zhejiang University will organize the Global WtERT Congress 2023 in Hangzhou, China. The Congress seeks to generate dialogue and global engagement among all members of WtERT representing Universities and research institutions and Industry leaders in China, with the ultimate objective of enhancing global cooperation to fully release the potential of knowledge and innovation on research and technology to curb methane emissions from waste.📅 Date/Time: 9:00am – 19:00 pm (Beijing), November 7, 2023 🌍 Location: Room 212, Run Run Shaw Science Hall, Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University🔗wtert.org/congress2023 Email: wtert@zju.edu.cn
